A\u00a0comic book<\/b>, also called\u00a0comic book<\/b>, <\/sup>comic magazine<\/b>\u00a0or simply\u00a0comic<\/b>, is a publication that consists of\u00a0comics\u00a0art in the form of sequential juxtaposed\u00a0panels\u00a0that represent individual scenes. Panels are often accompanied by descriptive prose and written narrative, usually, dialogue contained in\u00a0word balloons emblematic of the comics art form. Although comics have some origins in 18th century in Eastern Asia, comic books were first popularized\u00a0in the\u00a0United States\u00a0and the\u00a0United Kingdom\u00a0during the 1930s. The first modern comic book,\u00a0Famous Funnies<\/a><\/i>, was released in the US in 1933 and was a reprinting of earlier newspaper humor\u00a0comic strips, which had established many of the story-telling devices used in comics.<\/sup>\u00a0The term\u00a0comic book<\/i>\u00a0derives from\u00a0American comic books<\/a>\u00a0once being a compilation of comic strips of a humorous tone; however, this practice was replaced by featuring stories of all genres, usually not humorous in tone.<\/p>

The largest comic book market is Japan. By 1995, the\u00a0manga\u00a0market in Japan was valued at\u00a0\u00a5586.4 billion\u00a0($6\u20137 billion), <\/sup>with annual sales of 1.9\u00a0<\/span>billion manga books (tank\u014dbon<\/a>\u00a0volumes and\u00a0manga magazines) in Japan, equivalent to 15\u00a0<\/span>issues per person. <\/sup>\u00a0In 2020 the manga market in Japan reached a new record value of \u00a5612.5 billion due to a fast growth of digital manga sales as well as an increase in print sales. <\/sup><\/sup>The comic book market in the\u00a0United States\u00a0and\u00a0Canada\u00a0was valued at\u00a0$1.09 billion\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>

<\/sup>Beginning with the late 2010s manga started massively outselling American comics. <\/sup>As of 2017, the largest comic book publisher in the United States is manga distributor\u00a0Viz Media<\/a>, followed by\u00a0DC Comics<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Marvel Comics<\/a>\u00a0the original feature full length special edition franchises including\u00a0Superman<\/a>,\u00a0Batman<\/a>,\u00a0Wonder Woman<\/a>,\u00a0Spider-Man<\/a>,\u00a0the Incredible Hulk<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the X-Men<\/a>. <\/sup>The best-selling comic book categories in the US as of 2019\u00a0are juvenile\u00a0children’s fiction\u00a0at 41%, manga at 28% and\u00a0superhero comics at 10% of the market.<\/p>

Another major comic book market is\u00a0France, where\u00a0Franco-Belgian comics\u00a0and Japanese manga each represent 40% of the market, followed by American comics at 10% market share.<\/sup><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Comic books are reliant on their organization and appearance. Authors largely focus on the frame of the page, size, orientation, and panel positions. These characteristic aspects of comic books are necessary in conveying the content and messages of the author. The key elements of comic books include panels, balloons (speech bubbles), text (lines), and characters. Balloons are usually convex spatial containers of information that are related to a character using a\u00a0tail element.<\/p>

The tail has an origin, path, tip, and pointed direction. Key tasks in the creation of comic books are writing, drawing, and coloring. There are many technological formulas used to create comic books, including directions, axes, data, and metrics. Following these key formatting procedures is the writing, drawing, and coloring.<\/p>

<\/sup>In the United States, the term\u00a0comic book<\/i>, is generally used for comics\u00a0periodicals\u00a0and\u00a0trade paperbacks\u00a0while\u00a0graphic novel<\/i>\u00a0is the term used for standalone books.<\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
